The game has a load of personality. From the names of the characters (Johnny the football star, Billy the sheriff's son, or Jake Cartwright the drifter) to the types of buildings in town (Farmhouse, the 'Road out of town'), and even the types of event cards within the decks(a personal favorite of mine shares the same name as the game itself). All of the elements of the game make it feel like that movie you saw one late saturday night. The game can end very quickly (I've won a round as the zombies by the end of my second turn) or last longer, but the whole time it zips along at a nice pace, with good rules that have everyone involved and keeps things from being tedious, a personal favorite is how the human players can go in any order they like allowing them to mix it up a bit. Its pretty common to play the game and finish a round just to reset and start again, which I havent seen as often with other games and seems (to me) to reiterate how well designed the pacing is. I had read online somewhere that the survivors can be over powered, but in my experience the game so far has been very balanced.
The quality of the art and materials within the box are all very high. The zombie and survivor pieces look nice and detailed, and the rest of the game pieces are of a solid cardboard type construction. We've played many games and there is no sign of wear. The art work like the general personality of the game leaves you with that familiar feeling, while having its own style. When you see the farmers daughter character (who's name I am forgetting) its exactly how you would see her in a late night low budget zombie film.
The vanilla/basic rule set has the survivors tasked with killing 15 zombies within 15 turns or else the zombie hordes come out en masse and all are doomed, versus the zombies holding out 15 turns OR killing of two of the hero characters. But this is only the first way to play, included are scenario games to try something new, like escaping town in the pick up (better find some gas and keys) or protecting towsfolk (just as interesting and familiar as the rest of the characters). There are some official expansions to the game (I dont own them so I can't rate them at all), and there are also communities online with loads of player made scenarios. This game has more or less limitless play time, there are so many ways to play that are fun and catchy!
This game essentially lets you and your friends live out your own b rated zombie flick, it even includes a soundtrack to build atmosphere! I can't think of one thing bad to say about the game. For the price, you are hard pressed to find a game as catchy, and simple to learn, while being of such high quality and having so much replayability. Even if zombies aren;t your thing, the game mechanics and humor will keep you interested.
I first played LNOE at a friends house. Nobody had played before so there was a bit of improvising on the rules. Regardless, I thought the game was very different to most board games and loads of fun. I bought it the next day for myself and shortly after, I took it to a small get together (7 people). Since the game only allows 6 players, I volunteered myself not to play and instead helped explain and enforce the rules. It was here that I realized that the game isn't for everyone. 4 people in the group were intrigued by the game and got very excited whenever heroes had to fight zombies. The other 2 lost interest in the game after the first 20 minutes. They thought the rules were overly complicated and the game was too slow. I later found out that the reason the game was slow was because we kept stopping to check the rules. The game eventually was cut short in favor of some other activity. My new game was a failure... I cried...
The next day, I read the rules extensively. I noticed we had made numerous rule changes and were not playing very well. I called 2 of the players that demonstrated interest in the game to play after work. We had such a fun time that we played a different scenario every day for an entire week. My friends and I were hooked. I am even considering buying the expansion packs.
The game is perfectly balanced! Anyone complaining that the game is not balanced has not read all the rules, I know this from experience. The cards are funny at times and the game really does play out like a movie. The cards have the heroes do things that are typical to a Hollywood horror movie like bickering (lose a turn), sacrifice themselves unnecessarily (stay in a square with zombies), lights go out in a building (heroes move slower inside buildings) and "Heavy Rain" (players move slower when outside).
CONCLUSION:
I HIGHLY recommend this game ONLY if you have friends that enjoy strategy games and/or are patient enough to learn the rules. The rules aren't extremely complicated but I HIGHLY recommend at least one person learn the rules extensively before playing. This will avoid having a slow game due to everyone looking at the rule book every 2 minutes. If you do that and have the right group of friends, you are all in for one the most fun board games out there!
